Plane Ticket Pricing Is Effing Ridiculous |

I'm taking my second solo trip ever next month to nashvegas for a week. My first trip was a whirlwind weekend in ATL for J back in '03 or '04. I
can't remember right now. I got the cheap seats, nonstop and even then they weren't all that cheap. So, I decided upon myself to post a thread for the
frequent or not-so-frequent flying metal tube users to post good and bad traveling stories.
BTW - if any nashvegas RKOP'rs want to meet up and point me to open mic nites. Lemme know. Message me or sumthin. Flying over the Hawaiian Islands in February is beautiful. I play music. I do kung fu. I go to concerts. I support local music. You should support local music too.

i love flying. absolutely loooove it, even when i'm shoved into the back row and have to lean forward a little to see through the window in the next row
up. i love take off. i love landing. i love getting my favorite spots with a window seat. i love knowing what my various favorite seats are depending on what
kind of plane it is. i even love most airports, as long as they have at least one place with good food and a good view of the runways. i can't comment on
ticket prices at the moment because i work for an airline (a very good regional one, not the majors - don't hate!), as do my parents, and i've been
flying standby for little to no charge since i was in 7th grade. it's interesting listening to other people's stories because sometimes they will
complain about stuff that i'm so used to by now, i don't even view it as a negative. for example, i have absolutely no sympathy for people who whine
about "long layovers" ("i was there for twoooo hooouurs") because you don't know what a "long" layover is until you've
been sitting in atlanta's international terminal from 6am to 6pm, or have been bumped off the 1pm LA flight and have to wait until 9pm for the next one,
unsure if there will be space for you even then. for me my layovers are usually either, "well we're here for 8+ hours, what do you want to do?"
or "RUN!! - it's on the next concourse over and we have FIVE minutes and they might have already given our seats to the next person!". on the
plus side, the other night my friends were talking about a play on broadway and someone said "okay let's go to new york" "yeah, catch a
redeye" and even though they were joking, in my head i was thinking "i really need to do that sometime soon, actually.." it's exhausting as
hell, but so worth it. there's something oddly freeing about walking onto a plane with no checked bags and just your purse.
anyway.. i could go on for a long time about this. i haven't really travelled by air in a while (a year .. yes that's a while for me), so i'm feeling nostalgic haha.

i'm flying from sacramento to LA to visit my brother for the weekend. it's a 5-6 hour drive and it takes a tank of gas one way.
i got tickets on southwest for $59 each way... so for the exact same price as driving, i'll be there in 2 hours instead of 6. plus i get to fly! my worst airport experience was coming home from NYC two years ago. it was june and there was some seriously odd thunderstorms that grounded the flights from JFK. we waited 4 hours in the terminal to get on the plane, then 2 more inside the plane before taking off. by the time we got to vegas for our layover (which they promised us was waiting for us since there were like 30 people on that flight), our flight home had left without us. it was 1am and the next flight was at 9am. they told us where the nearest hotels were but said since the reason we missed our flight was weather and not something they could have prevented, they wouldn't pay for the cabs/rooms. so we decided instead of paying $100 to get to and sleep in a room for less than 5 hours, we'd just hang out in the airport. everything was closed. we found a balcony with no foot traffic and tried to sleep on all our bags to protect them but i couldn't sleep. it was uncomfortable, i was afriad i couldn't keep all my stuff safe, and the stupid muzak was SOOOOO loud. overall, what was supposed to be 6-7 hours of travel became 21 and we were exhausted. tonight will be better. won't it?

Lindsay - you might be my aero-travel twin. I really, really love it too. Everything about it down to the sound of the coca cola cans opening up during
beverage service. I love the feeling of airports. I get completely inspired by the thought of all these people going to so many places. I live very close to
the Newark Airport, and often have to drive past it on the Turnpike. Sometimes, I'm witness to three or more planes coming in for a landing. The best is
when you're driving right along side a plane that is taking off. I've thought many many times about being a flight attendant. I'm a member of
almost every major airline's frequent flyer program, even if I've never flown with them before. Ah I just want to travel!
The cost of flights nowadays is so depressing for me. I hope it starts to go down soon... I gotta fly to California in January! |

oh my god, that is the best.. i used to drive my parents insane when i was younger. we'd be in a big city, near an airport, and i'm like "AHHH
look plane taking off, right above us!" and sometimes it would catch my dad's attention since he's the other aviation fiend in the family, but my
mom would be all "LOOK AT THE ROAD. where is our exit?? i think we passed it!!" hahahah.
i've never really wanted to be a flight attendant. i like having no responsibilities. right now, i actually work on the graphics for the flight attendant manual of the airline i work for.. and let me tell you, it is a beast. 872 pages. less than 100 relate to "service" aka the things you actually see a flight attendant do on a typical flight. the rest is basically "here are examples of various emergencies you must be prepared for. if a customer is unhappy, it is your fault. if there is a situation, you must deal with it with little to no help, no matter how dire the situation is." etc etc etc. way too much responsibility for me. i rather enjoy being able to just sit back and relax and enjoy the flight. but if you're up to the job, then you have my utmost respect! if you really want to get into the industry, let me know, i can point you to our interview listings..

worship it like you worship Jebus. Best cheap flight page on the net hands down. Flying is my middle name... actually, its Mike, but it could be flying... I'd be Flying Bruski.... (i bet you there's some dude in Bulgaria with that name) I remember 4-5 years ago when EasyJet tickets were sold for peanuts. Thanks to Bush and his Oil Crusade, the prices everywhere are now almost doubled, but they're still fucking cheap. And Southwest makes me laugh.. 59 dollars San Fran-San Diego... haha.. Ryanair has free tickets sometimes... you end up paying like 5 Euros for the entire ticket, taxes included. Basically, you yanks are a bit behind on the low fare deals, but you're getting there. Good thing is that airplane tickets TO the schtates are way cheaper now than ever before. but seriously, give momondo a try. Cuz once you go momondo, you never go, uhmm... gonzo? (fuck, what rhymes with mondo?) Bruski--| BONGO!!! bongo rhymes with momondo!!! ah, fuck it.. |

my sister just came back from a cruise. they flew to miami and cruised to the bahamas. so when it was over the cruise ship ended up getting back way earlier
than expected so they applied for an earlier flight. so the way it works is if people don't show up they would get their seats. anyways they ended up
getting an earlier flight and the seats were in first class! it was pretty sweet. her first time in first class too

Not relating to being on the plane but I've been "around" planes since I was a kid. John Wayne Airport in OC had a flight path over my pool in
the backyard, than in Carlsbad our house was near Palomar Airport so I always got to see the planes land. But the coolest was one night I was driving
southbound on the 15 Fwy near Miramar Air Station and a Super Hornet was landing right as I was driving under it. My sunroof light blocking door has been
jammed for years and so I looked straight up at the full moon and this fighter jet landing underneath it.

Thanks for the link Mike ... it looks really useful. I have not really tried Farecast before, but I know some people who really like it. Basically it tries to figure out whether fares for a particular
flight are going to rise, hold steady, or drop.
I did not start flying until I was almost 18 and I was so terrified at first (I am afraid of heights), but I have gotten used to it. I like watching the clouds and the ground below. It is interesting to see how different areas are laid out ... when it is dark out, it is pretty to see how all the lights get blurred together. I liked flying from Sacramento to Ontario (near LAX) because Southwest always had cheap flights and it flew out of the newer terminal in Sacramento which has a lot of stuff. Now I fly from there to Denver using Frontier ... which basically has nothing in its terminal.

it too.

a few things that have happened during recent flights that were pretty cool:
-i saw a full circle rainbow thing in the clouds. it was the weirdest thing. it was a rainbow. but a full circle. just chillin in the clouds. and i shifted my head around and rubbed my eyes and everything... but it stayed in the same spot on the clouds. -flying into san diego was awesome... how you fly practically between the buildings in the city when landing! that was an experience -the scenery when flying over colorado in the middle of winter but with no clouds was pretty awesome -im sure theres other cool things. i love flying but! when i flew to chicago last summer... the flight attendant girl caught me juuuust as i was waking up from a heavy nap... and then talked my ear off about her life/child/wanting to be a professional musician/school. while she was super nice... i was not in the mood to talk. im not so sure i was done with my nap yet. it was just a break from it that turned into learning the full history of some girl. but thats okay i guess

As someone whose household income depends on the success of on a certain Atlanta-based airline that recently merged with a certain Minneapolis-based airline, I
must say.....
I LOVE to fly!!!! actually: I'm terrified to fly, but considering I do it at least once a month, I've learned to deal with my fear. ...through alcohol.... LOL, Jillian

Oh man, talk about travelling stories... I love flying, though I always freak out while packing because I always go over the weight limit
But my worse flight story was that Virgin Airlines broke my guitar and it wasn't even funny Another horrendous plane story.. Oh man, I was feeling so sick on the plane I wasn't even thinking straight. I got up to use the toilet, then slipped back into my seat, but left my feet sticking out cause I had to get comfy (the seat was really crammed). It was really dark and everyone else was sleeping. Then an air steward came rushing down the aisle, not noticing my feet, and just tripped and almost fell flat on his face. OMG, I still remember the look on his face like it was yesterday. I feel soooo bad. Haha, good times.
