Has anyone bought their album? It's not out here in Australia yet I believe, or at least in my pathetic little far away state...

last nights dcfc show was quite possibly the most interesting concert ive ever attended, for a variety of reasons.
im sure youre all aware of the crazy heat that weve been suffering here in the east over the past few days. in the city things have been IMPOSSIBLY uncomfortable, as were all concrete which just holds onto the heat and turns the whole city into a giant oven. mccarren park pool is an AWESOME venue in brooklyn [mccarrenpark.com] that is an old public pool [read: ALL concrete] that they turned into a concert venue which is sorta like a giant, open space, general admission amphitheatre. its very williamsburg brooklyn--gritty, kinda dirty with peeling paint, funky...a lot of character. needless to say, it was HOT an relatively crowded with people [show was sold out]. sitting on the hot concrete was kinda like getting a hot-stone massage, only without the massage. the sound wasnt great, in part owing tot he wonky venue, but i wont get into that here. rogue wave opened and although i wasnt [and still am not, however i plan to become more] familiar with their music, i liked their vibe and they were a great opening act. be sure to hear some of their stuff if you get to see them on this tour with this show. good sized, chill sorta crowd. not a lot people under the legal drinking age [no offense to you that are young, but as someone who has been of the legal drinking age for quite some time, this was VERY WELCOME.] so at least there wasnt a lot of teeny bopper crazy screaming or signs or anything of that manner. death cab came on about 8:15 or so and had a great set list. they opened with 'bixby canyon bridge' which is a great opener, and played a surprising mix of new and old stuff. i expected the show to be saturated with new stuff given that this tour was on the heels of their latest release, but they played some stuff off the photo album, plans and transatlanticism. it was a nice mix. the setlist, as well as a recording of the show can be found here: [http://www.nyctaper.com/?p=237] apparently this is the relatively standard mix for this tour. the one thing that bummed me out was 'their version of 'i will posses your heart.' it was kinda average. with a song with such a crazy long intro as that, i was hoping they would somehow change it up in a live performance. instead, it sounded just like the album. [they do indeed sound decent live, however. no heavy recording booth assistance for these guys. what you hear is what you get.] i was excited to get long divison, cath... we got acoustic ben on i will follow you into the dark, although he was accompanied by...well...everyone, which sounded pretty cool when youre in the thick of the crowd. ben had a couple of guitar and sound issues, which were kind of annoying, but in the end didnt really sour my live dcfc experience all that much. if you go to the set list youll notice that the last song is [weather mayhem] and that indeed was the case. unfortunately, the show ended early due to uncooperative weather. they played for about an horu and 15 minutes. the INSANE heat finally started to break around 9:25 and they had to cut the show short. there was wind, lighting and a torrential DOWNPOUR with rain drops that felt the size of golf balls which came down about 10 minutes after dcfc played the last few notes of 'the sound of settling.' it was really kind of surreal and wild. the wind was blowing so hard that the rigged lights above the band were perilous and threatening to fall on their heads. it lent an AWESOME FEELING to 'the sound of settling' making it seem crazy, frenetic, urgent and almost eerie--like nothing id ever heard before. so, all in all--show was pretty decent. i was bummed it ended early, but given the circumstances it was what it was. live death cab is no live mraz as there isnt a lot of banter with the audience and the songs sound more or less like they do on the albums, but it was cool none the less. theyre their own, sorta chill deal, and i didnt expect nor want anything crazy. they were able to play well to the setting and filled up the venue without relying on any sorta crazy lighting or stunts. im hoping they come back to the city soon as id see them again--next time, hopefully, without the crazy weather. oh, and where did the other half of ben gibbard go? he looked so SKINNY! |

i saw them in lehi, ut (little south from salt lake) a few weeks ago. aweeeeeeeeeeesome. they ended with transatlanticism and it was just the perfect song for
that. amazing. i loved that they played all the favorites from various albums along with new stuff. i think there are only a couple songs i've heard since
then that i'm like "UGH, i wish they had played this." pretty much anything i thought of during the show that i wanted to see, ended up being
played. i wasn't sure how i'd feel being farther back from the stage than i'm used to (i go to mostly local shows, plus i'm really short so
being in the middle of the crowd just doesn't work for me, visually - i decided to go for it, though). i ended up about 15 rows from the front, most of the
time with only a view of ben, and sometimes even that got blocked from people in front of me jumping or dancing.. and yet i still had a kick ass time, which to
me means their energy and talent really compensated for my crappy view point. usually all those things would bug the crap out of me, yet i still had an awesome
time, so bravo to death cab for making that happen.
