Please dont tell her this was the last song written for the album and Im so glad it happened. After Steve left from his week with us in San Diego in pre-production he said hed love to hear one song that really rocked and that I should put on my rock voice and write it. It only took about two hours to find it. I grabbed a few chord progressions that Eric and I had been playing about 5 years prior and finally added a story to the structure. I hope this song finds single status as its a definite departure from the all-loving Mrazisms weve all grown too familiar with. Its a passionate anti-love song that ironically required a lot of love to achieve the closure-based composition.
The best story about recording this song was how I got electrocuted because somewhere along the miles of twisted cables in the studio there was a ground problem. While strumming over the pick-ups on the guitar and placing my lips on the mic, I became the ground for the energy and my lip was surged with 110 watts of rock nroll. Im no Bill Ny Science guy so its tough to explain how it actually happened, but we got it on tape and the shocking moment will be featured on the DVD side of the limited edition dual disc. It took us about 30 minutes to fix the situation so we would let Dennis touch the mic until the pain went away. Thats why we love him so.
#9 just in time..........
Mr. Curiosity Okay, this ones my favorite on the album. I mean that this time. Weve played this one live as well but for the fun of making fun of the funk we frequently attempt. The album version has a slightly saddening surreal quality as its mainly piano and vocal. I wrote this one three days after the curbside tour. I was exhausted and all out of love like air supply. I was visiting Lester Mendez after the tour and we were playing with all these gadgets to make a dance track but I just couldnt commit. My lethargy kept creeping through. So he began to play a kind of eulogy on the keys and I just sang it out. No one thought it would make the record at first since it was such a departure from anything else Id done. I immediately called Dennis who was a few doors down at home and had him come over and edit the 8-minute piece for me. The result is something in the clouds, like when you look long enough into the skies and think you see a face of a bunny on skates smiling back at you.
