My arm is remarkably better. I'm gaining more and more strength everyday. Today i visited my acupuncurist as well as a Qi-Master (pronounced chi). Song for a friend – This song was the last song of my set on the curbside tour and was always intended as the album’s grand unwinding finale. The way it bookends the project with Crane is so appropriate. I’d always wanted to start this album where Rocket left off and Crane does just that. This song I think captures the hope of the next record already as it features everyone, guests included, on the album, back for one last hoorah. We...

Please don’t tell her – this was the last song written for the album and I’m so glad it happened. After Steve left from his week with us in San Diego in pre-production he said he’d love to hear one song that really rocked and that I should put on my rock voice and write it. It only took about two hours to find it. I grabbed a few chord progressions that Eric and I had been playing about 5 years prior and finally added a story to the...

FUN FACTS!!!!

This is one of my favorites on the album and it features Rachael Yamagata on guest vocals. It’s an upbeat Queen styled duet about two people who can’t seem to get connected because their phone service has a strange delay in the message delivery. Plane – I’ve always believed that “Track 8” on any record is the stand out track. It just so happened that Plane made it to this slot by natural selection. This song is massive and once again shows Lillywhite’s awesome influence in the studio. Eric Hinojosa gets tons of credit for taking a guitar-based demo and transforming it into something symphonic. Everything from grand pianos, strings, and the call of the Ewoks is featured in this track.
I’ve loved it since the day it was written but the meaning behind it was too precious and too politically incorrect to release. It wasn’t on the album until the last night of recording when we decided to let our inhibitions go and make something super crazy from the bits and pieces we’d recorded throughout the process. it's become an instant favorite among the band and i to play...

It varies every time it’s played from something sarcastic to something sloppy to something organized and funky. We had the same problem recording it. A song like this could go any direction. We tried a rock version, a bit-hop version and about nine other variations on the same progression, and what we ended up with was a happy compromise that all parties agree on. Wordplay – Here it is. This is the first single and is meant to sound exactly as so. It’s a straight satire on what a first single should sound like, full of tongue and cheek “I know what’s going on here” kind of attitude. It is my story after all. Once you get past the initial shock of the song’s pop velocity, you’ll find the soft center composed by a happy little boy making a masterful mockery of his own agenda, beating the average critic to the punch, if I do say...
